]]>Vision Lacrosse collabs with Hong Kong's 852 Lax brand.
]]>We have had the privilege of immersing ourselves into the Hong Kong lacrosse scene over the past few months and have been captivated by the community. Hong Kong’s legacy of lacrosse extends over 25 years; however, a recent surge of participation has introduced a new generation of players – a generation of immensely impressive potential.
This new generation has been fostered under a relatively newly structured governing body that has introduced youth, secondary school, and high performance programs for the male and female game. The cornerstone of the sport in Hong Kong has called the University of Hong Kong (HKU) its home.
Wesley Wong has been playing lacrosse for 6 years and, like the vast majority of local players, he began playing during his freshman year at HKU. Wesley is also a current member of Hong Kong’s national team and co-owner of 852 Lax (we'll get to that in a second). “Almost every Hong Kong player has their origins at HKU,” he explains,
“Every hall (dormitory) has its own team… this is where many first pickup the game of lacrosse”
From here, brave and curious freshmen funnel into the flourishing competitive lacrosse community. Senior teammates share coaching roles and pass their knowledge to the newcomers in hopes of forging a winning tradition for their respective halls. The eager players, Wesley notes, continue their growth by studying videos on Youtube. These inter-hall athletes embrace intense fraternity in representing their dormitories with the hopes of hoisting a trophy at the end of their 3-month season.

The best players find themselves with invitations to the High Performance Program, an elite development squad that represents Hong Kong and feeds into the National team. “It’s a rare opportunity and you learn so much about the more advance dynamics of the game,” Wesley reflects.
Apart from a mutual passion with Wesley for lacrosse on the field, we also share an entrepreneurial ambition. Wesley is one of the co-owners of 852 Lax, a local lacrosse company that makes lacrosse equipment more accessible in Hong Kong. "852 Lax is more than just a lacrosse retailer", Wesley’s co-owner, Ken Hirata, explains,
This is why we are proud to announce our first collaboration with 852 Lax: our “Hong Kong” cap. The streamlined cap introduces our new lightweight performance fabric, perfect for the tropical summer heat. Embroidered on the front is the five-petaled Bauhinia blakeana flower found on the national flag. Additionally, the embroidery on the back displays Chinese calligraphy for “Hong Kong” while also resembling the characteristic neon signs of its urban night. This detail pays homage to the unique clash of tradition and modernity that defines Hong Kong.
Our hope is that this lightweight performance cap serves as a piece of national pride for local players to wear and helps them spread their passion for lacrosse with the rest of Hong Kong.

We had the pleasure of joining and capturing the Arrow's throughout their 2017 campaign and it is difficult to imagine a better run organization. From the broader community inward to the players themselves, it is clear that Six Nations lives and breathes lacrosse and that translates into the success of this team. As the Arrow's president, Lewis Staats, mentioned in episode one of "Together", there's a lot of people working behind the scenes and that success even trickles in from the feats of their youth feeder programs.
The Arrows are a masterfully built machine and it is no surprise that their coaching staff was awarded the Jim Bishop "Coaching Staff of the Year" award.
On the floor, the Arrows were an unstoppable force. The perennial power really had no weak links. Built on the foundation of Doug Jamieson (who went an astounding 32-0 this season), the Arrows D were impenetrable and the O matched their fire-power with a mesmerizing flare.
It's not difficult to recognize many of the star players in their line-up — and if you're unfamiliar now, you will certainly be familiar in the coming years because a lot of big names will be coming out of this team. With that said, their success came from those players as much as it did everybody in between. As Coach Merrill says in Ep.3 of "Together", this is where team success comes from — "one family working together towards a common goal".
We wanted to ensure that the socks that were provided had captured the essence of what it meant to be an Arrow. To us, that meant family, community, and ultimately unity.
The artwork was inspired largely from Iroquoian Wampum belts. The Orange band at the top resembles the Tuscarora Alliance Belt, where each band represents one of the six Iroquois nations.
The human figures wrapping the black band are inspired by the imagery of several belts, said to represent friendship and unity. They hold lacrosse sticks to symbolize the power of the sport in uniting players .
Lastly, on the back of the sock, bellow the numbers is the Hiawatha belt's symbol. It symbolizes the 5 original parties to the Iroquois confederacy. With our sock we use it to pay homage to lacrosse's roots with the Iroquois people and its deep connection to the Arrows organization, which resides on one of the largest Iroquois reserves.
In the lacrosse world, there are few Junior A organizations that match the stature of the Six Nations Arrows.
Vision Lacrosse Co. was fortunate enough to collaborate with the Arrows in producing a custom team sock (news on that to come).

It was only fitting that the CLF hosted its event in Montreal since that is where Dr. George Beers had conceptualized a standardized form of the game. Enthralled by the vigour of the sport as he saw the local Caughnawaga communities play, Dr. Beers envisioned Canada's game.
It is no coincidence that the the 150th anniversary of lacrosse aligns with that of Canada. Dr. Beers ambition was of nation building at heart. He rejected adopting cricket — the sport of Canada's crown, England. Rather, lacrosse was a new and unique game to the rest of the world and one to which Canada could attach its identity. It did indeed just that, and not too much later a group of Caughnawaga players would play to the presence of Queen Victoria as Canada exhibited its infant national identity to the world. She said that, "the game is very pretty to watch."
Vision Lacrosse Co. had the privilege of visiting the lovely Montreal to attend the celebrations hosted by the Canadian Lacrosse Foundation (CLF). The festivities included a lecture series, a range of local tournaments for boys and girls in both box and field, a museum exhibit, as well as the main spectacle: a re-enactment of the game as it was historically played.
The lecture series featured prominent scholars and speakers on the topic of lacrosse. J. Alan Childs, author of “Minnesota Lacrosse: A History”, spoke of the typically overlooked presence of lacrosse in the Midwest through out history and how the Ojibwa migration, which had observed Iroquois lacrosse, had developed its own form of the game.
Jane Claydon, spoke of Canada's role in the worldwide development of women's lacrosse. Her presentation voyaged through the proliferation of the sport since 1883 and it beautifully concluded upon the full-circle journey which the 2015 Canadian U-19 women's team had achieved via its gold medal finish since the programs conception.
W.B. MacDonald's lectures discussed the rise and fall of Canada's initial professional lacrosse leagues from 1901 to 1924. It was fascinating to learn of the prominence that lacrosse had in Canada during this era, which attracted local crowds comparable to the NCAA championships.
Donald M. Fisher spoke of the the various forms of indigenous stick ball games, which resemble earlier sorts of lacrosse. Focusing on the the Mississippi River system, he presented an idea which had never crosse my mind before: that the thriving indigenous communities were located to the core of North America. While we are largely taught history through the lens of the colonialists who land and observe life upon the periphery of the continent, aboriginal life flourished as it penetrated deeper into the land. Here, he discusses great cities which played unique stick ball games, which differed in form to the Iroquois originated game we play today.
Daniel Ferland spoke of the Cultural role of the game of Lacrosse, which touched based on the meanings that transcend Dr. Beers' modern take.
Louis Tewenhni'tashon Delisle had a heartfelt lecture on the history of lacrosse in Caughnawaga and the role of its players on Turtle Island. He mentioned a fascinating anecdote of how a historic tribal grudge led to a brawl at an away game that he played, which then led to embrace. With eyes glistening with tears as he cradled the stick of his childhood, he also talked about the importance of lacrosse growing up in his generation — an era when his culture was rejected. He said,
"this is what kept me connected to my past. There was no teachings, no longhouse — the longhouse was considered to be pagan. The authorities had done such a good job that you felt that old stuff was pagan, it was not to be learned about. But yet, through lacrosse, through the language of my elders, that’s the only thing that you could say kept our identity at those times."
The McCord museum exhibited historical displays of lacrosse. It included a time line of the game featuring artifacts and photos that illustrate the evolution of what has become lacrosse. Legendary stick-maker, Alf Jacques of Onondaga, and Travis Gabriel of Caughnawaga hosted the venue, which also included an array of different forms of lacrosse sticks that existed throughout the years.
The keystone event of the celebration was the re-enactment games which took place on McGill's lower field. The first game was a medicine game played between the Bear Clan and the Wolf Clan as it would have been played in the region prior to colonial contact. Actors were from the Caughnawaga Survival School. Face paint colors distinguished the teams. Players wore merely traditional buckskin loincloth (and black shorts underneath, which the M.C. jokes were on sale at Walmart)— no protection. While most were bare-boot, some did wear moccasins, realistically portraying trade that would happen with the Huron peoples. The ball was made of the fine leather, which attracted much European trade of the time. The game was simulated to be a healing medicine game, so points were not necessarily the primary goal. Rather, the aim was to lift the spirit of an ill elder who sat at the sideline and observed. Nonetheless, players aimed at a wooden post which was planted in the ground of the opposing team's end to push for the lead.
The second game emulated one of the first modern lacrosse games ever to be played after Dr. Beers' conception. The referees wore three-piece suits, and drew their umbrellas out to signify a goal. Players also sported the attire of 1867 lacrosse: long johns beneath shorts, as well as a stylish cap. The team in red represented the Caughnawaga (or Kahnawake) Lacrosse Club and the Blue was the Montreal Lacrosse Club. The ball had been changed to "Indian rubber" which was a standardizing element of Dr. Beers' rules.
All in all, the festivities were an absolute blast and we were extremely excited to witness a truly historic event.

The town of Langley, British Columbia has been rumbling this past week as four of the top junior lacrosse teams in Canada duke it out for the Minto Cup National Championship title.
The championship features four Canadian teams: the Orangeville Northmen, Delta Islanders, Calgary Mounties, and the Coquitlam Adanacs — the winners of the Ontario, British Colombia, and Alberta provincial junior titles, as well as the runner-up of the hosting province respectively. With that into consideration, you know these games are all business because these kids are the best of the best in Canada’s hotbed lacrosse provinces. I mean, these kids ball.
The Minto has a history that transcends its modern day reputation. The cup was donated by Lord Minto who had migrated to Canada in 1884. He would eventually work with General Middleton during the Riel Rebellions before becoming the Governor General of Canada in 1904. As the years passed, Lord Minto grew attached to many Canadian customs including a love for lacrosse. Can you blame him?
At this time, a growing divide loomed over the formative hours of the Canadian dominion. A young Canadian identity was developing, but politicians struggled to mend the growing divide. What is something all Canadians share? Well, politicians saw sport as part of that Canadian identity and began to support the popular Canadian pastimes. Sports became a formative political force for national unification and in defining the Canuck we know today. Lord Grey brought Canada together with football; Lord Stanley brought Canada together with hockey; Lord Minto brought Canada together with lacrosse.

The Cup was donated in 1901 and competed for by teams from Montreal to Victoria. It was originally awarded to the national champions of senior men’s lacrosse until 1909 when it’d then be awarded to the national champion of Canadian professional lacrosse. The Cup would eventually be lost in storage at 1924 until 1937 when it was re-discovered and transferred to the hands of the Canadian Lacrosse Association to become the title we know today. The Minto title has since gained a reputation for one of lacrosse’s highest accomplishments and has hosted many legends still tearing it up. It’s past contenders include Gary Gait (Rochester Knighthawks, Toronto Nationals), Brodie Merrill (Toronto Rock, Boston Cannons), Mark Matthews (Rush, Denver Outlaws), Cody Jamieson (Rochester Nighthawks, New York Lizards), Stephan Keogh (Rochester Nighthawks, Atlanta Blaze)… the list just keeps going. Are you convinced that these kids are just nasty yet?
With the round-robin now over, this battle of the North will culminate in a best-of-five clash between the Orangeville Northman and the Coquitlam Adanacs.
While this matchup was heavily anticipated (I mean, cats had it predicted), the Islanders and Mounties made some noise with impressive feats for both teams. The Islanders had claimed their franchise’s first B.C. Jr. A title in a decisive series against the Adanacs. Of similar significance, the Mounties raised many eyebrows during their run as they captured their first Ws in franchise history against a champion Ontario or B.C. team at Minto play. To put it simply, though the outcome was anticipated, round-robin play has been far from predictable. Every game was a cage-match. Both teams’ accomplishments had rattled the status-quo and are great testaments to the growing development of lacrosse throughout Canada.
The final series promises to present an all-out war on the floor. The Northmen and Adanacs have both had dominant campaigns in their recent history, and it would not be the first time their paths have crossed.
The Adanacs have had eight Minto appearances in franchise history, four of which have been in past five years. With that said, they’ve been left with just one Minto title; that was against the Northmen in 2010. With a deep and unsatisfied hunger for gold, you can expect the Adanacs to be coming out hot. The Adanacs' Minto run has been fuelled by their deep roster.
Colin Munro, #41, has tallied 2 Gs and 7 apples for 3 points per game (PPG) — a major threat as a feeder. John Hofseth, #16, has a more rounded presence this Minto campaign with 5 Gs and 4 apples for 4.5 PPG. Playing only 2 games in the Minto so far, Hofseth will be well rested and an absolute threat for the Northmen who are 4 games deep. Other key threats to keep an eye out for include Jean-Luc Chetner, #48 and Tyler Pace, #14. Derrick Downs, #27, an Ontario native, has had relatively a low profile so far in his 2 games for the Minto run. However, with several seasons of experience against the Northmen before his move to Coquitlam and an impressive 2016 regular season campaign, we think he can come out from under the radar with guns blazing. Can’t forget the starting netminder holding it down in the crease, Christian Del Bianco, #35, who is already playing with the NLL’s Calgary Roughnecks at the age of 19! He’s got a goal against average of 5.02 in the Minto. This guy is an absolute ninja between the pipes.
While these B.C. boys can do some damage, Orangeville is no team to be writing off. This team had just dethroned the back-to-back reigning Minto champions, the Six Nations Arrows, in a decisive sweep. That’s nothing to overlook. Beyond that, Orangeville has a had a history of success at nationals too. They’ve made 8 appearances, and brought The Cup back to Ontario 6 of those times – the last time being against the Adanacs in 2012.
The Northmen bring heavy arsenal. Adam Charalambides, #20, leads the tournament with 8 Gs and 7 apples at 5 PPG. Complimenting his firepower is Scott DelZotto with 5 Gs and 5 apples. Another player to keep an eye out for is Joel Tinney, #55, who’s got 4 Gs and 5 apples. Does that name sound familiar to you? Probably because he tore it up at Hopkins as the 2015 Big Ten Rookie of the Year. The kid is so slippery, you definitely want to look out for him dancing around some D. Other Boys making a noise are Gilroy, #81, and Bridle, #91. This squad is full of giants who make their big body presence known as they push cage. It’ll be interesting to see how Coquitlam responds to their fire power. Lastly, we cannot forget tendy, Nolan Clayton. The Ontario counterpart to Del Bianco has an undefeated record in the regular season. I guess that just makes sense when you’re practicing with these big guns.
All in all, this series will inevitably be an entertaining one as these two powerhouse teams compete to make history in this battle of the North.

Well, we came across Super Stringing Lacrosse's Youtube channel a couple months back and we were beyond impressed with what he was doing. Jack Townsend started his Youtube channel in grade 9 for his freshman year school project.
The goal of this project was to put together a report of something you are passionate about, and Jack chose to report on his journey with lacrosse for that year. Since its creation, Super Stringing has grown to become a notable character in the online realm for lacrosse. Catering to the needs and wants of a growing 2400 subscriber following. Jack shares his take on stringing, game theory, lacrosse news/highlights, and countless product reviews.

It's no secret that lacrosse has reached an explosive era in terms of growth. In 2014, lacrosse had become the fastest growing sport in North America all while 38 nations competed in the 2014 Mens World Championship in Denver.
Fast-forward to 2016 and that explosive growth is becoming more deeply entrenched into these nations. Beyond the respective, local, expat representation (commonly reflected in the men's national teams) has emerged grassroot infrastructures bringing lacrosse to the youth level. This youth development is arguably the best measure of lacrosse's international growth. In the 2016 U19 Mens World Lacrosse Championship, the FIL had hosted a record high of 14 teams, which included a remarkable count of 6 teams making their debut. Among those 6 was Team China, a team we had the pleasure of supplying custom team socks to. |
Lacrosse is breaking into the mainstream of Western culture, not just in North-America but also increasingly in Europe. Asian lacrosse is just coming out of incubation. I suppose this is what was most remarkable about their presence at the U19 World Championship this year.
In less than a decade, expats have developed an infrastructure amongst Chinese youths, which has increased in traction. One of those expats is Mike Elefante who has been beyond instrumental in developing the sport within the communities of Shanghai (Read more at CNN's "Shanghai Lacrosse Takes the Field). Other key individuals include Ziyan Zeng, Edwin Yu, Gordon Muldoon, Barton Wheeler, and Raymond Pan who were especially vital in volunteering their time and knowledge in bringing this inaugural U19 team together. It's inspiring to see that the work of these expats is proving to be so impactful.
"Most of us here have been involved with China Lacrosse for a long time and these past two weeks has held a lot of significance, we became a full member nation in the FIL and we really grew as a federation. Seeing this team grow and emerge from a bunch of guys who were happy to take part, to a team wanting to take over games was something unforgettable. The boys finished the tournament in 9th place, finishing with 5 wins in 7 games. Beyond that, China Lacrosse has been recognized as a full member nation to the Federation of International Lacrosse (the international lacrosse governing body). It's safe to say that the China lacrosse development has achieved wondrous feats this past championship, and is on a strong path to future success — we can't wait to see what they become!

]]>The 6'1", 215 lb attackman hailing from the Mohawk Nation raised a lot of eyebrows earlier this July at the 2016 U19 World Championships of Lacrosse. His remarkable performance merited him a rewarding spot on the All-World Team and Tournament Attack MVP.
Referred to as "the Human Highlight Reel" by the commentators of the games and commonly compared to the likes of Gary Gait or even the Thompson brothers, Tehoka brought a fresh creativity to the Championship that immediately started a buzz.
He displayed his flare at each game, no matter the stakes, and, with consistently mesmerizing and masterful showmanship, managed to burry the ball in a fashion never quite seen in the sport before.
Gary had his "Air Gait"; the Thompsons have their signature shovel shots; Tehoka brought it all. I mean, he was scoring while diving, without looking, shovelling, buzzer beating, one-handedly — you name it, and he had had done it. And done it in against the best players in the world at his age group.
For a player so praised in such a competitive arena, he had been one of the most humble athletes we've ever met. Converse to the fierce tenacity he brings with his game, he was happy to meet fans after the matches and share his passion for the sport with the players coming from across the globe.
Tehoka was truly a shining star in this competition, and a we cannot wait to see him tear it up with Albany.

What a spectacle!
We were extremely excited to have the opportunity to supply the FIL with socks for their officials at the 2016 U-19 World Championship. International lacrosse is one of the pillars to which our brand strives to support and we were happy to do so here. We knew this was an event to catch, and it did not disappoint.
There was amazing talent and spirit coming from all teams — from the Iroquois flare to the US chemistry to the Mexican excitement that illuminated the fields throughout the games.

Just last week an Instagram image shared by Vision Wear founder, Matt Tse, was featured on the trending social media account, Laxfitgrid.
The trending account features fan submitted gear setups on the daily. With only 73 posts and just under 5000 followers, the account is definitely still young but with the rapid growth of the game of lacrosse and over 743 images that have been submitted, we're excited to see it blow up.
Laxers are notorious for sporting a unique kind of swagger unlike any other sport and Vision Wear is excited to be a part of that trend.
